December Days …the last gift, Myrrh!

The third gift but by no means the least was of course myrrh!

Some myrrh facts for you courtesy of Rae!

  • Myrrh is actually a small tree, native to north-east Africa. Myrrh essential oil is distilled from the sticky golden resin which is removed by cutting into the bark.
  • Myrrh is known as the ‘mucus mover’ as one of its main qualities is to energise the respiratory tract, so perfect for those Christmas/winter bugs.
  • Ancient people recognised the healing powers of myrrh and used it to cleanse battle wounds. Like frankincense it also has anti-ageing properties.
  • The aroma of this lovely oil promotes calmness to frazzled emotions

Like frankincense it is a fragrance or oil we associate with Christmas but when you read up about it you discover that it was used by the ancient people in so many different forms.

So the next time you sing about “Myrrh is mine, it’s bitter perfume” just think about its history and that it’s healing properties have been around for a very long time.

The scents that we surround ourselves with can have a dramatic affect on our emotions and the atmosphere around us. In tomorrows Blog Rae has some suggestions for the oils that can help scent your room and calm things down!
